Exploding Whale, Florence Oregon

In 1970, the Oregon Highway division decided that the best way to get rid of an 8-ton beached whale was to blow it up with dynamite. This, of course, didn’t work. Naive onlookers, unknowing of the bloody bits of beached whale they would soon be pelted by, populated the sandy Oregon beach. When the dynamite was detonated, blubber was launched into the sky before raining down in a quarter mile radius causing panic and damaging cars.

This two-color Riso poster pays homage to one of my favorite internet discoveries, available via QR code. The gold and blue ink were chosen to emulate the warm vintage grain seen in the restored footage of the original broadcast. The display typeface used in this poster was designed by myself.
